Kemble Pianos / Technics

26.11.2008
News
Now based in a modern factory near Milton Keynes, Kemble Pianos has been making fine instruments since 1911. The company’s reputation for excellence has seen its famous upright pianos claiming international awards and success in selling their excellent pianos around the world has led to them achieving "The Queen’s Award for Export”.
Kemble’s Paul Sandifer explains that company has always invested in the very best craftsmen and tools and that now days this means ensuring the factory is equipped with cutting edge technology. The Homag Group has had a long standing association with Kemble Pianos both as a supplier and technical partner.

Indeed the factory still operates a Homag double-end tennoner, Homag edgebander and a Bütfering wide belt sander. Homag UK are the exclusive UK agents for the world renowned Joos presses. When Kemble decided to invest in new press technology it was natural to include Homag UK on the list of potential suppliers.
Kemble Pianos
Being a manufacturer of a very traditional product does not mean that Kemble is a modern flexible company. Their manufacturing processes are up to date and adhere to stringent policies. The company is aware of responsibilities and are accredited with the ISO 140001 standard for Environmental Management Systems. Paul Sandifer explains that they are adapting their manufacturing to modern requirements and this means producing the piano furniture panels in smaller batches. The company was operating a multi-daylight press which was now slightly superfluous to current requirements and certainly energy inefficient.

In consultation with Roger Wilks of Homag UK and Joos’ Axel Reckendres, Kemble arrived at a specification that suited all their current and future requirements. This was a high-spec Joos single daylight press with an automatic throughfeed facility. Crucially, the specification includes water heated platens which is delivering significant energy savings.

.Paul Sandifer says that a number of factors swayed the decision in favour of the Joos machine. He says that they believe the engineering and technical features to be superior to anything else they examined. He liked that fact that it is a down stroke press with a solid base. He felt the entire construction would deliver excellent reliability. He says that the Joos also has advanced features like the ABS pressure sensors for both operator safety and platen protection. The press also has gold anodised platens which reject any adhesive residue and other contamination to ensure that the quality of the veneer and other lamination remains of the extremely high standard demanded by the piano components.

Paul Sandifer says that Kemble Pianos are extremely satisfied with the investment and performance of the press. He says that the Homag UK technical support and ongoing back-up was also a major factor in buying the Joos press.
